AUSTRALIA’S FINE WHITE WINES.

Australia is famous for its red wines, especially shiraz or blends of shiraz and others, but white wines of this “New World” wine producing country have gained high quality levels of late.

For most wine drinkers, chardonnay is the white go-to grape in Australia, but other grape varieties yield outstanding wines if the terroir is carefully and expertly chosen.

Few countries on earth can rival Australia’s ability to ripen grapes fully, and occasionally even over ripen. It is a natural advantage. The serendipitous combination of blistering heat and Antarctic currents provides near-perfect conditions, leading to exceptionally ripe, concentrated fruit and that sets Australian fruit apart. The only aspect wines drinkers must consider is low, natural acidity levels. The winemaker adjusts them, but the shelf life of such wines is shorter than those with naturally high acidity.

Eden Valley, McLaren vale, in South Australia, Tasmania, and Victoria’s Yarra Valley are “cool climate” regions especially Coonawara, Padthaway, and Adelaide Hills vineyards that are on high altitudes.

Chardonnay still leads the charge, but Riesling, and other dynamic blends are starting to turn heads with their expressive fruit, flavour and depth.

Also, Australian winemakers are at liberty to blend to their hearts’ content to create wines that their European counterparts would like to, but are legally not allowed.

Below, please find a few fine Australian white wines:

Dry Dam Riesling, 2008, D’Arenberg, South Australia

Tilly’s Vineyard, 2008, Henschke, Barossa Valley, South Australia

Traditional Riesling, 2009, Pike, Clare Valley, South Australia

Chardonnay, 2008, Sticks, Yarra Valley, Victoria

Chardonnay, 2008, Cold Stream Hills, Yarra Valley, Victoria

Roussanne, Marsanne, Viognier, 2008, Torbreck, Barossa Valley, South Australia

Australia has some beautiful white wines. One of my favourites is Brown Bros. dessert wine. It is very sweet but absolutely divine.

Jacobs Creek is also a very nice and very popular red wine. Matter of fact, I think I like too many to list here :-)

Australia is no longer allowed to name our sparkling wine as Champagne and it must always be labeled as “sparkling wine”. But as the great bard said ” A rose by any other name will always be as sweet.”
