Typically people enjoy sparkling wine more often during the Christmas season than at any other time. In my opinion sparkling wine is invigorating and refreshing and can and should be enjoyed at any time – when it is warm, or hot, or just balmy, and cold.

Large families from various parts of the country get together to celebrate, small families splurge in bubblies that they would otherwise not normally drink, and couples indulge more by cracking open champagnes or sparkling wines.

For those who may want to know, champagne is a sparkling wine from northeastern France – from a region called Champagne where the methode champenoise was invented. It is an elaborate, and labour intensive and time consuming process.

The soil is chalky and only three grape varieties may be employed, namely pinot noir, chardonnay, and pinot meunier.

Today, many other regions all over the world produce sparkling wines using either the Champagne method, or the Charmat method, which is less costly and faster than the former. There are other still less expensive ways of producing sparkling wine.

Here are some sparkling wines that represent good value and would serve you well.

Prosecco Spumante, Villa Sandi, Veneto, Italy

Produces from the prosecco grapes in Veneto, northern Italy, this pale yellow wine exudes aromas of apples and white flowers. It is dry, refreshing, has good perlage, and is well balanced.

Prosecco Spumante, Giovello, Veneto, Italy

This pale straw-coloured fruity sparking wine is light with citrus flavours. It would be fine as an aperitif, to toast friends and a family speech. Serve with light white-fleshed fish.

Sparkling Chardonnay/Pinot Noir, Jacob’s Creek, Australia

Australia has been producing sparkling wine for many years. Jacob’s Creek’s sparkling wine is refreshing, exuding lemon aromas, and faint redcurrant flavours. Light and refreshing. Enjoyable with cream cheeses and light seafood dishes.

Brut Rose, Mumm Napa Valley, California

G.H. Mumm is one of the largest champagne producers in Champagne. More than 20 years ago the company bought land in California’s Napa Valley and produces fine sparkling wines using the champagne method. This rose consists of 85 per cent pinot noir and 15 per cent chardonnay. Aromas of red and black fruits (strawberry, bing cherry and dark plum) exude from the glass. Light in texture and deeply flavoured with a long and refreshing finish.

Brut Prestige, Mumm Napa Valley, California

From the same winery like the rose mentioned above. It displays citrus and stone fruit aromas. It offers a fine and light texture with a refreshing finish.

Reserva Heredad, Segura Viudas, Catalonia, Spain

This fine sparkling wine from one fo the best Spanish producers is composed of macabeo, and parellada varieties indigenous to the region. Aromas of biscuit, honey and flowers waft out of the glass. In the mouth it displays dried fruit flavours. It is elegant with a long satisfying finish.

Brut Premier, Roederer, Champagne, France

Pale golden in colour with almond and toast aromas. Creamy texture and elegance. Perfectly balanced. Recommended as an aperitif, it goes well with light seafood, creamy sauced scallops or shrimps

Brut Prestige, G.H. Martel, Champagne, France

This family owned old champagne producer is known to produce outstanding wines at very reasonable cost. The wine is fragrant, light, well nuanced, fresh, and refreshing.

An excellent wine to serve as an aperitif, for a toast after a speech to family, light fish and seafood dishes.

You can enjoy this lively wine throughout the year.

I love champage and see a few on your list I’m going to try. One of my favorite sparkling wines is Roederer Anderson Valley. When I discovered it several years ago, it was also around $20. My company prints party invitations and champagne is always one of the favorite themes chosen for any celebration! Wine On!

I really enjoy wine, especially sparkling wine and I agree with the article that it’s invigorating and refreshing. There is something about seeing a beautifully crafted wine glass with bubbles. Someday I would love to visit northeastern France, so I can try some champagne from it’s homeland. I raise my glass and say cheers!
