South American aboriginals have consumed yerba mate for centuries before the conquistadors arrived, and lived healthy lives.
The yerba mate tree, indigenous to the region now partially occupied by Uruguay, Brazil, and Argentina, provided the source of healthy-giving-leaves when dried and ground.
Over centuries, the indigenous peoples discovered that yerba mate provided vitality, longevity, boosted immunity, cleanse and detoxify the body, tone the nervous system, provide hair colour and density, retard ageing, combat fatigue, and reduce effects of debilitating disease.
It is an excellent source e of vitamins and minerals including carotene, vitamins A, C, E, B1, B2, B complex (riboflavin, panthothenic acid, biotin, magnesium, calcium, iron, sodium, potassium, manganese, silicon, phosphates, sulphur, hydrochloric acid, chlorophyll, choline, and inositol. Essentially, yerba mate is a mini pharmacy; you can enjoy and benefit from it.
In 1964 The Pasteur Institute declared yerba mate to be a first rate antioxidant, the body’s main defence against free radicals.
Free radicals are chemical compounds produced by the human body as a result of exposure to pollution radiation, heavy metals, and pesticides.
The gastrointestinal tract seems to be the organ that benefits most from yerba mate as it aids digestion, helps alleviate constipation, and even repairs damaged gastrointestinal tissues.
In the past, yerba mate was rarely seen in the North American marketplace, but now, thanks to Mennonites who lived in South America for many years, but decided to return to Canada and/or the U S A. it is relatively easy to obtain even pouches that need to be steeped in hot or cold water for a few minutes.
You can brew yerba mate like tea (one tablespoon for one cup), or in a coffee brewing machine or French press.
Similarly, you can steep yerba mate in cold water, in a cool place. The longer you steep, the deeper will be the flavour.
You can sweeten yerba mate with honey or granulated sugar.
Yerba mate is also available in a range of flavours i.e cardamom, cinnamon, citrus, lemon/ginger and in bulk.

Interesting post, I never knew yerba mate was such a complete nutrition source. As a tea it’s quite tasty. BTW, very cool site theme.
